The servants who passed by the palace saw the empress pressing the emperor down to the ground, ferociously kissing him and they suddenly realized that the emperor liked bold women, no wonder other women could not be favored.
While in the midst of kisses, blackness suddenly went pass Ji Wu Jiu's vision, and when he recovered his sight, he found that the person in front of him changed back to Ye Zhen Zhen.

So late, I know (!), but actually, I think it means that he got so used to play the strict and distant father that he became too proud to actually show some affection to his son as it would ruin his image (as a strict father) in his son's eyes.

I think that last sentence was meant to tie the knot for Ji Wu Jiu's confusion about Fang Xiuqing's beard and his resentful act toward him. So instead of dragging the story further.. the author just decide to end with "some things are not meant to be known" lol.
